A New Therapy for Hair Loss: PRP

There is another tool in the hair-rejuvenation industry called PRP, platelet rich plasma hair-loss therapy. For this non-surgical procedure, the doctor draws blood from a patient and extracts the platelet-rich plasma. Under local anesthesia, the doctor injects the PRP into the dermis to stimulate the stem cells and encourage hair regrowth. There is no downtime and no restrictions on activities. The patient can manage any mild pain after the procedure with non-narcotic analgesic medication. There is no post-wound care needed. This is a new option for patients who are experiencing hair loss.

It Works Biologically

PRP is a biological therapy. Prepared plasma is richer in platelets than normal blood. The plasma contains growth factors which have significant positive effects on hair growth. The platelet growth factors induce follicle stem cells to shift from a dormant state to an active state which starts the process of hair production. The platelet growth factors can “wake up” dormant hair follicles and begin the production of new hair. So this therapy can give strength to the existing hair, reduce hair loss, and increase the actual number and quality of hairs by stimulating the stem cells. This therapy can be used in conjunction with other therapies.

Women and Men with Thinning Hair Can Benefit

Both male & female patients with thinning but not completely bald areas are the best candidates. Earlier treatment is better and may postpone or reduce the need for surgical hair transplants. Patients with surgical hair transplants can also benefit from PRP, which can increase graft survival and improve healing. PRP is safe and natural because the procedure concentrates the good cells from the scalp and injects them directly back into the area where it is needed. There is absolutely no chance of getting a blood infection from another human being. PRP involves using your own cells that are not modified or changed, and it will not be rejected by the immune system.

Benefits of Therapy

PRP therapy offers the opportunity for hair growth to those patients who want nonsurgical treatment for hair loss.  It’s the perfect therapy to compliment the use of Minoxidil or DHT blockers. We also recommend PRP therapy for patients who cannot tolerate other medications since PRP is completely natural. Hair loss can be difficult, and PRP therapy can be a valuable tool to help rejuvenate hair.
